Student’s Guide to Geology Field School | What to Buy, What to Borrow, and How to Prepare

Introduction

Field school is often the highlight of an earth science degree. It’s where classroom theory meets real rock, real weather, and real-world problem solving. It can also be the first time you’ve needed to invest in specialized equipment. This guide helps you prioritize your purchases and avoid common mistakes.

What You Need to Buy

These are personal items you’ll use throughout your career:

Brunton Geo Lite Transit Compass: At $169 CAD (before student discount), this is the most affordable transit-style compass that meets professional geology requirements. It’s lighter than a full Geo Transit and handles strike-and-dip measurements with accuracy suitable for both coursework and early-career fieldwork.

Rite in the Rain Geological Field Book: Don’t show up with a spiral notebook from the campus bookstore. The 540F is designed for geology with numbered waterproof pages and reference charts you’ll actually use.

Deakin 10X Hand Lens: The LED and UV model at $34 gives you mineral identification capability beyond what a basic loupe provides. You’ll use this throughout your career.

Estwing Rock Hammer: The 22oz pointed-tip model is the standard. Buy once, use forever. These hammers are virtually indestructible.

What Your School May Provide

Check with your instructor before purchasing these items, as many departments provide them for field courses:

       Jacob’s staff and Abney level

Grain size cards and classification charts

GPS units (though having your own is convenient)

       First aid kits (group/crew level)

Rock saws and sample preparation equipment

Don’t Forget the Basics

Appropriate Footwear: Sturdy hiking boots with ankle support. No trail runners. If your field area involves steep, wet terrain, consider caulk boots.

Rain Gear: Quality waterproof jacket and pants. You will get rained on. Budget options soak through by day two.

Sun Protection: Hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses. High-altitude and snow-covered field areas create intense UV exposure.

Hydration: A good water bottle. We carry the Hydro Flask Deakin Limited Edition if you want something that keeps water cold all day.
