Field Readiness Scholarship

The Deakin Field Readiness Scholarship supports students enrolled in field-based academic programs across Canada.
Each selected program selects one student to receive both:
$1,000 cash & $500 in field gear
- This scholarship is faculty-nominated and awarded to a student who demonstrates:
- Strong academic potential
- Enthusiasm for fieldwork
- Benefit from financial support to participate fully in field studies
Our goal is to help ensure that students are prepared, equipped, and able to take full advantage of their field experience.

Olin Dahlstrom – UBC
Olin Dahlstrom is a third-year Bachelor of Urban Forestry student at the University of British Columbia. He complements his academic studies with seasonal work with the BC Wildfire Service, demonstrating a strong commitment to hands-on field experience.
Olin has a clear interest in wildland urban interface fire management and takes a proactive approach to developing the skills needed to address these challenges. His enthusiasm for fieldwork and long-term dedication to forestry and environmental stewardship make him a strong emerging professional in the field.

Joshua Cherney – UNBC
Joshua Cherney is a first-year M.Sc. student in Natural Resource and Environmental Studies at the University of Northern British Columbia. He brings diverse field experience, including undergraduate research in bat ecology and professional work in environmental consulting near Fort McMurray.
His current graduate research focuses on wood-dwelling and wood-degrading insect biodiversity within controlled silvicultural trials designed to evaluate reforestation strategies under climate change. Joshua is a thoughtful and driven researcher whose work aims to improve ecosystem services, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable forest management practices.

Claudia Castillo – University of Saskatchewan
Claudia Castillo is a fourth-year geology student at the University of Saskatchewan who has demonstrated strong determination and commitment throughout her academic journey. Since moving to Canada six years ago, she has worked diligently to build her path in the geosciences.
Claudia has gained valuable industry field experience and is continuing to develop her skills through advanced field coursework. Her perseverance, work ethic, and enthusiasm for geology position her well for a successful career in the field.
